First, virus protection is not optional, but mandatory unless you enjoy reformatting your hard drive and losing your work. In addition, without using virus protection, you are actually helping the bad guys that are in the business of stealing information and creating havoc with malware and viruses. So, be a good neighbor and citizen and use some sort of virus protection. If you do not have money, there are several free anti virus programs to use such as Avast (avast.com).
Second, run your virus program. I have seen customers that have the software installed on their systems but choose not to run it on a regular basis. You do get some protection by just having it running while you work, but you must do regular full scans to keep your computer virus free. If you do not want it to run while you are using it, do it at night or during times that you are doing something else.
Third, *never* open an email attachment until you have had it scanned by your virus program. Do not open it even if you know the source. Only open it if you are expecting an attachment or are very certain that it is not a spam mail made to look legitimate. These spam messages change constantly and are often sent to try to somehow lure or scare you into opening an attachment that is going to compromise your computer and your financial information or use your computer for even more malicious intent. When in doubt, error on the side of caution and don't open the email attachment. Call the institution that is claiming to be sending you stuff and verify first. I can guarantee you that most if not all of the email that comes with a .zip attachment is going to be a scam.
Email scams change frequently. They are meant to trick you into clicking on the links in the email message and entering information.
